Salon BECK

Luxury salon in the heart of Portland’s Pearl

The site had previously been occupied by another salon where the client was once employed years prior, so she knew the space well and came with a lot of valuable feedback on areas to improve for both customers and the stylists. We agreed to use all the existing utilities and maintain as much of the original shell as possible, so that we could really focus on refining functionality and investing into details. Drawing from a lot of classic European interiors, the main styling room was reconfigured with trim panels added around the perimeter – modulating the space, creating a sense of orderly repetition, and framing out eight individual stations plus spots to hang belongings. Four additional stations were then added at a central double-sided island, all in all leaving the perfect precise amount of remaining space for the stylists’ range of motion, customer privacy, and paths of foot traffic. The millwork continues on with a salvaged 17th century wood carving crowning the doorway between the main space and shampoo room, and a nod at an enfilade invites views beyond into the color lab that’s been fit with floor to ceiling cabinetry and ample work space for the stylists. The brushed brass details, herringbone floors, and range of muted lavenders, roses, and blush tones carried throughout various surfaces, offer a sophisticated, timeless and feminine feeling. Overall there’s a subtle uniformity and gallery-type atmosphere of the space, which is then intentionally interrupted by unexpected touches, like the unique arrangement of dried flowers held by delicate stem vases at each station or the dreamy total tone-on-tone pink powder room.
